Storefronts in downtown Frazee got an addition of bright and colorful art thanks to kids from CornerStone Youth and Community Center in honor of National Provider Appreciation Day on Friday, May 9.

Childcare workers are celebrated on this day, including teachers, nannies, and caregivers, all of who are essential workers in helping working parents continue to provide for their families. The day focuses on building awareness of the holiday, thanking childcare workers, and showcasing their contributions to their communities.

CornerStone was approached by Lakes & Prairies Community Action Partnership (CAPLP) to join the cause.

“Alicia Bauman from CAPLP approached us to create art to help raise awareness,” CornerStone Youth Coordinator Sandy Oelfke said. “Then connected us with a source for a few supplies. Community members from little to adults assisted and a group of elementary students brainstormed positive words. We had a tag board full but just chose a limited number from there.”

CAPLP provides a wide array of programs and services that are designed to meet the unique needs of the children, families and seniors. Their programs and services work together to help achieve their mission to eliminate poverty, empower families, and engage communities.

Oelfke and Executive Director Mackenzie Hamm were busy hanging the banners around town on Tuesday, June 6.

“Thanks to the businesses who let us hang them up on their establishments too,” said Oelfke.

According to National Today, increasing awareness ensures that childcare providers can continue to offer their services. Many of the organizations that childcare providers work for are nonprofit or are government-funded. They rely heavily on fundraising events and donations from members of the public and local businesses for education programs and transportation for those who need it.

National Provider Appreciation Day is held annually the Friday before Mother’s Day.
