Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…We are still at 72 calves on the ground, with most eating the fresh grass on pasture. The new magic number will be eight. Eight cows or heifers left to calve. Three of these are the new heifers we bought this spring and the other five are cows that have fallen a little behind.

The calves of these late calvers (not calfers) most likely will be kept when we sell the main group as calves we raise up for our own consumption. Some of the beef is also sold in quarters or halves. Now there are seven steers and one heifer in the feed lot getting their corn, alfalfa and corn silage each day.

The bulls are still separated in their own feedlot with around a month to go before they go to work for a couple months. Rough life they have, working a total of two months a year with only one job to perform.

Haying season has started with the first 40 acres cut and baled and stored in the shed.  There are about 20 acres down and drying and of course it was scheduled to rain off and on for a week straight. The rain is always welcome, it just makes putting up first crop hay a little harder with the cooler temps.
