Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…We had a couple more calves in the last week or so, that leaves us with six to go. All the pastures are doing very well with the recent rains, and the corn is coming along as well. We are able to rotate the cow/calf pairs to a new paddock without having to chew down the pasture too much.

The more forage on top of the ground allows for more of a root system to develop below ground. We like to keep 6-8 inches of forage in the pasture when they are moved, thus allowing quicker regrowth for when they make it back to that paddock in a few weeks.

The corn will definitely be Knee high by the Fourth of July this year. Haying season is moving along, and we are about halfway done. The intermittent rain is playing with the drying conditions so we are keeping up with it as best we can.

The last month or two I have had several people compliment me on my newspaper articles. A couple of older gentlemen talking about how they grew up on a farm and really enjoy my articles. Hearing comments like that is what keeps me writing the articles the way I do. Farming is easy to write about because it is just the facts of how things operate on our farm and many others.

Independence Day or The Fourth of July is this coming weekend. Please remember that fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal in our great state of Minnesota.  Please be cognizant of your neighbors when lighting the “legal” fireworks this Friday evening. I as well as many of you enjoy the fireworks but there is a limit to setting them off in city limits. Please be safe and I don’t want to hear of any missing fingers or toes after the holiday.

Have a nice week!
