Frazee-Vergas Forum

Five young ladies will compete for the Miss Vergas crown and four contestants will be competing for the Princess Altona crown in the 31st annual Miss Vergas Scholarship Pageant. Miss Vergas contestants are Zoie Zitzow, Anjjelika Gunderson, Madison Berry, Desiree Bauer and Sydney Dahlgren. The Princess Altona candidates are Bianca Cruz, Rebecca Simmon, Hannah Beck and Emily Bachmann.

The street project on the southeast area of Frazee that also included a portion of West Main Avenue was officially cancelled at the Frazee Council meeting Aug. 8. The news may make a few dozen people happy, as many attended the public hearing in June and expressed displeasure with the cost of the property assessments of the $1.25 million project, which included installing new sewer and water pipes as well as reconstructing streets and adding curb or sidewalks on some portions. Of the $1.25 million, $362,550 was to be assessed, while the city was to pay $237,635. The reason the project was cancelled was because a grant that would have covered $652,815 of the project cost didn’t come through because the state legislature did not approve the transportation bill. 

The title of Frazee Police Chief has changed hands and Tyler Trieglaff now wears the badge. Mike Johnson turned in his badge as he took a job as a police officer in another department.

Two senseless acts occurred recently in Frazee. Vandalism was reported Thursday, Aug. 1 to the Frazee Care Center rose gardens. Over 50 plants were pulled out by two Frazee males, ages 21 and 22. The culprits were apprehended, confessed, apologized to gardener Eleanor Trieglaff and agreed to pay all damages. The two involved in the crime have now moved out of Frazee. Friday, Aug. 2, it was noted that one of the 5-foot legs on the new turkey sign near the eastern-most exit on Highway 10 was missing. The turkey leg was seen at the WE Fest by horse patrols, and recovered on the same day it was reported stolen. The new turkey sign, erected July 12, also suffered from a July 11 fire. The place where the sign was stored burned, but firemen were able to save most of the sign parts. A few tail feathers remain to be placed on the sign, created by Howard Elijah, a former Frazee High School graduate, now of Detroit Lakes. 

New playground equipment was installed at the Vergas City Park on Loon Lake. The equipment was installed with manpower and funds from the Vergas Lions Club. 

Frazee Women’s Bowling Association president Judy Wirth presented Mary Ann Miller with a replica of the Hall of Fame plaque that was lost in the Zee Lanes fire earlier this year. The women’s association paid for the plaque.

Sherry Davis, Miss Frazee of 1970 will relinquish her title to a new queen at the Miss Frazee Pageant scheduled for Saturday night at the high school auditorium. Eight girls will be competing for the honor to represent the Frazee community next year as Miss Frazee 1971. Candidates are Judy Schermerhorn, Robin Chadwick, Cindy Hanson, Bev Stenger, Debra Hanson, Jean Bruhn, Cheryl Jacobs and Sue Oelfke.  Larry Holmuth of KDLM will serve as master of ceremonies for the pageant. 

Frazee is celebrating Turkey Days, beginning on Friday, Aug. 13 with a Lucky Bucks drawing at 8 p.m. Activities for the celebration will continue through Sunday, Aug. 15.

The Frazee-Vergas Public Schools will start their new year on August 30 at 8:30 a.m. 

Reverend Daniel A. Noah assumed duties as the new pastor at Sacred Heart Church of Frazee on July 6. Father Noah succeeds Father Joseph Mulvey who was transferred to Fisher, Minn.
