Frazee-Vergas Forum

The Red Cross will be providing free smoke alarms and the Frazee Fire Department will install them in your home or apartment on October 11 from 6-9 p.m. The fire department will be sending out about 20 firefighters from the department, which will split into three to five groups to go out into the community in Frazee fire trucks.

After a 30-day probationary period, Tyler Trieglaff officially accepted the position of Frazee Police Chief at the monthly Frazee City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 12. Trieglaff, 42, had been offered 30 days to decide if he wanted the promotion after being a full-time officer for more than eight years. 

Local hardware stores are scrambling to keep up with the need for mouse- traps this fall. There are different theories as to why we are seeing the influx of the rodents, some blame it on the rain, the mice are looking for dry places to live, another theory is that because of the acorn crop was hurt by the late frost this past spring they are looking for food. People are seeing mice in their homes more than ever this fall, some are even finding them in their vehicles.

The Frazee-Vergas School District is proposing a 4.13 percent levy increase for 1996-97. The proposed school levy was approved by Frazee school board members Monday evening. The 1996-97 proposed levy is $1,515,166 compared to $1,455,039 for 1995-96 certified levy.

Becker County voters will be asked during the November 5 election whether or not to eliminate the election of three county department heads. A petition to eliminate the election of auditor, treasurer and recorder of Becker County was presented to the Becker County Commissioners Tuesday,  Sept, 17. The commission voted to put the issue on the ballot Tuesday.  The petition carried 951 signatures from various parts of the county, of which 888 signatures were confirmed. 

The United Community Bank, Frazee, will be celebrating its one-year anniversary Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A $500 savings bond will be given away and refreshments will be served.

The Frazee Hornet football team did something no other Hornet football team has done and that was to defeat the Mahnomen Indians Friday, 12-7. The win was a tremendous boost for this year’s Hornets as the win was the first victory for the team.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said last Thursday that federal inspectors have impounded 50,000 turkeys at the Swift Dairy 7 poultry Co. in Detroit Lakes. Dr. Kenneth M. McEnroe, he head of meat and poultry inspection said the turkeys were from six or seven flocks grown at Peterson-Biddick Co. of Wadena, and were withheld from the market after normal Swift testing procedures found “unexpected levels of PCB” an industrial chemical, in some birds.

It was learned Tuesday that Becker County will receive an additional $48,000 to finance new public service jobs under the Emergency Employment Act of 1971.  Becker County was recently designated eligible for $121,000 for each of the next two years under the new program signed recently by President Nixon.
