Frazee-Vergas Forum

The 2017 budget is still in the process of being fine tuned, but Frazee Administrator Denise Anderson expects property owners in Frazee to see a 3.38 percent tax increase. The total expected revenue in the working budget for 2017 calls for $1.46 million, of which $285,500 comes from property taxes. The 2016 property taxes brought in $282,500 to the city.

District 3 Becker County Commissioner John Okeson stopped by the Frazee City Council meeting to report the city of Frazee will soon have daily bus service to neighboring towns. Okeson said the schedules are currently being created, but expected the service to start in February or March. 

Fire Chief Albert Doll reports that Frazee Fire Department installed 160 smoke detectors that were supplied by the Red Cross.

Frazee Elementary Principal Travis Nagel reports that the elementary playground remodel is about 90 percent complete, with landscaping to be done and a handrail to be added in the spring.

As Magnum Concrete Construction nears the end of its second season of business, Jason Niemi and Ryan Osterman are looking ahead at their goals for next year. The two men started the company in the spring of 1995. They operate the business out of rural Frazee and handle cement work including poured floors, walls and basements. 

The Frazee City Council approved a 67 percent increase in council member salaries from $30 per month to $50. It has been noted that there had not been a pay change in the past six years and now council members are also members of the Frazee Economic Development Authority, which meets monthly. 

The first Frazee Oktoberfest held on Saturday, Oct. 5 was a resounding success. There were about 700 people who attended the event, at least 70 percent from out of town. The meal was served to about 550 people. 

Shauna Oelfke was crowned Homecoming Queen at the Frazee High School on Friday.

Last Monday night the School Board of the Frazee-Vergas District approved a resolution setting the tax levy at $549,800 distributed as follows: $445,800 for maintenance. $20,000 for capitol outlay, $78,000 for debt service, $6,000 for P.E.R.A. and Social Security payments.  The total levy is the same as that made in 1970.

Tax payers in Becker County may get a break in 1972, perhaps as mush as 5 ½ mills, due to a possible cut of as much as $94,000 in the county’s welfare budget. The tax break, the first in 17 years, would come about if the approved recommended county welfare budget is trimmed from $796,000 to $702,000.

MariAnne Kohler, a senior at Frazee High School ,was crowned 1971 Homecoming Queen at the coronation program Friday morning at the high school gym.

Theodore Rohde, 65, of Gheen, Minn., formerly of Frazee, was killed in a one-car accident near Gheen Monday evening, Oct. 11, 1971.
