Fall sports programs reviewed

Tammie Nunn was named to the Frazee-Vergas School Board to fill the seat vacated by Matt Bauer.

Buaer resigned after taking a job out of state.

Nunn, a Frazee resident, has served on the school board for several years in the past. 

The board approved the appointment, and Nunn’s position will be one of four up for election come next November. The other seats coming to term are held by Board members Nathan Matejka, Daneele Shipman and Kimberly Antonsen.

Board members Thaddeus Helmers, Michael Frank and Tyler Trieglaff have terms that expire at the first board meeting of January 2025.

Runner makes state, 

volleyball has big turnout

Activities Director Nick Courneya provided the board with an fall activities report. 

The cross country team had nine boys and 12 girls that joined the sport. One runner, a senior named Nathan Johannsen, qualified for the state meet.  

The football team had 70 members join the program in grades 7-12. The team played the final game on its home field, as a new stadium is set to be built for next season. The team may also take the field next year with new uniforms. 

It was noted the plan for the stadium, parking lots and other improvements is nearing completion and will be brought to the board in coming months. Karger said the goal was to have the documents posted for bid by early December. 

The volleyball team had 80 members join the program. Courneya said that is the most student athletes to join volleyball since he took over the athletic director duties a few years ago.

The school has a partnership with the Detroit Lakes School District to offer swimming and diving to its students. Frazee has two students participating in the sport, one in diving and the other in swimming. Courneya said both students (sisters Mackenzie and Faith Hamm) earned all-conference honors. He added sections were slated for Nov. 12-13.

The fall trap shooting team placed fourth overall in its conference standing. It was noted the female division saw Makenna Fulmer as a top shooter. 

Band may head 

to Chicago in 2022

The board learned about tentative plans for a band trip for summer of 2022 to Chicago, Ill. Band Director Brian Selander said the thought is to have the trip over the July 4 weekend, and include a performance of the Star Spangled Banner at a Twins game en route to the Windy City. There is a potential performance opportunity at Six Flags as well. 

New hires welcomed 

to Hornet team

The school board approved hiring several new employees, including: Kayla Colvin, Vanessa Jaeger and Roger Thorp.

Colvin was hired as a Latch Key Aide and will be paid $12.44 an hour.

Jaeger was hired as a long-term substitute special education paraprofessional at the rate of $14.30 an hour.

Thorp was brought aboard the Hornet staff as an assistant varsity football coach. He will be paid $3,644 for the season.

The board also approved the resignation of a food service worker Lorie Totland-Kern.
