Frazee-Vergas Forum

Inaccurate accounting practices reportedly are the reason for the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store profit loss during two consecutive years. During a special Frazee council meeting regarding the liquor store losses, it was brought up on how the liquor store is reimbursed for products used by the event center. Frazee City Clerk Denise Anderson recommended that she, as well as Liquor Store Manager Tanya Mastin and Frazee Event Center Joleen Tappe, attend training for the accounting program being used. At the meeting it was noted the city recently switched accounting programs after being recommended to do so by the city auditor.  

Abel Aho, son of Mark and Terri Aho,  Fergus Falls, shot a 14-point buck at the Aho’s hunting land in rural Frazee. The 14-year-old is a very dedicated and passionate hunter. He shot the buck, which scored 176, at about 75 yards with a .270 rifle.

Winter blew into Becker and Otter Tail counties with a vengeance Thursday night, leaving a wide variety of snow depths in its wake. Near Frazee, about 6 inches fell and further north near Snellman about 12 inches. The storm started with rain which changed to fat, fluffy and wet snowflakes.

The Frazee Lions Club has made two milestones this past month, one being that they have inducted their first woman member, Sharon Tate of rural Frazee. Club membership opened up to women in the early 1990’s, but none had joined until this year. Their second milestone is that they have surpassed all recent membership drives by gaining seven new members. A new project the Lions are working on will be to construct a warming house at the new skating rink near Frazee Elementary. The Frazee Lions will pay for the materials -over $1,500, and will construct the shed this Saturday. 

Ownership of the Palace Café changed hands Monday. David Haugrud, 21, Detroit Lakes, purchased the cafe from his father Jeff Haugrud and Peggy Haugrud effective Monday. David has owned and operated the two Peggy Lou’s drive- ins in Detroit Lakes for about one year. David, a Pelican Rapids native, plans to keep the name of the restaurant as “The Palace.”

Winter hit full force over the weekend dumping about eight inches of snow on the area. The snow was preceded by rain Saturday making travel treacherous.

Frazee Forum

At a special meeting held Nov. 15th, the Frazee-Vergas School Board passed a resolution changing the tax levy for school district number 23 so as to conform with the limitations imposed by the legislature in the law passed during the special session last month.  This levy is $262,800 less than that levied in 1970. Until assessed valuations are available it is difficult to estimate what the mill rates will be. However, it is obvious that there will be a substantial reduction. The levy passed by the school board is over $16,000 more than the limit imposed by the new law. 

The Burlington Township Community Charity Fund Drive was recently completed with total donations of $809, which will be sent to the various charitable organizations, according to Mrs. H. V. Anderson., fund treasurer. 

Spending by the state and local units of government in Minnesota, computed on a per capita basis, has climbed to 10th highest among all states, according to the Minnesota Taxpayers Association. 

A combination vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella has been developed recently according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
