Notes from the Chief

Calving season has officially begun. April 5th is the official start and as of reading this there are 18 cows that have come in. After the loss of two calves on Thursday, the calf numbers are at 14. One will never guess how those little buggers will go.

One little bull calf going on two weeks old was crushed by the big cows as it was sleeping next to the hay feeder. The feeder will provide some bedding and a little shelter from the wind. The other calf starved to death. Mama is an older cow and you could tell the udder was full of milk. After we got the cow in the chute, we found out that the teat ends were still sealed shut. We had to use a teat dilator to open it up. We put one of the bottle calves on the cow but she will most likely end up as hamburger sooner than later.

Hopefully the weather changes its attitude and we can get the snow melted and have a dry calving season.
