Dawn Marie (Anderson) Blanchard, 61, of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully at her home on May 27, 2026 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, which she fought with courage and determination. She had previously beaten stage 4 breast cancer before this recent diagnosis.

Dawn was born in Minneapolis to Marvin and Jan Anderson. She grew up in rural Frazee, MN and graduated from Frazee High School in 1983. She received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Bemidji State University and was a proud Beaver to the end, often sporting her favorite BSU apparel. Stories about her friends and experiences on campus were among her favorites to share.
Dawn was united in marriage to Richard Blanchard in 1991 and was looking forward to celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary later this summer. Dawn and Rich built and remodeled several homes around the area and eventually finished their dream home near Lake Melissa. They raised three sons, several cats, and a flock of chickens over the years.
Children were Dawn’s passion. Throughout her career, she taught thousands of young minds to read through her preschool classes, library storytimes, and volunteer work, ranging from organizing Gifted and Talented programs to elementary school science fairs. She loved to share parenting advice, often consisting of her own creative approaches, and took great joy in hearing how her experience and guidance helped children and families thrive.
She also genuinely loved hearing about the lives of others. Besides her valued coworkers at Holy Rosary and Menards, many of whom were treated as dear family, Dawn carried strong friendships with so many others she met through her day-to-day life, even those she knew just in passing. Dawn would check in on her friends at every opportunity, and offer insight and guidance from her experience and Christian faith.
You could always find Dawn by following the trail of books. She never left the house without at least three, and her family was always ready to brave any weather to ensure she had the latest newspapers at hand.
Dawn was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Anderson; her father-in-law, Howard Blanchard; and her brother, Marlee Anderson. She is survived by her husband, Richard; three sons, Beau (Chyanne Fischer) of Lake Tahoe, NV, Ben (Victoria) of Davenport, ND, and Bob of Minneapolis, MN; her beloved cat, Honey Kitty; her mother, Jan Anderson; mother-in-law, Judy Blanchard; several siblings and in-laws; and a large extended family around the Lakes Area and beyond. In addition, she is honored and remembered by the many lives touched throughout her 40+ years in education and community service. Dawn was a remarkable woman of strong Christian faith and values. She will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Vergas, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Vergas, MN.
Dawn’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation for the dedicated care of the staff at Essentia Health St. Mary’s, especially her oncology team and the nurses and staff of the Infusion Center. Dawn always looked forward to visiting with them and sharing a few baked goods.
