James Matthew Maas, age 94, of Maple Plain, MN passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, May 8, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church (133 N Brown Rd) in Long Lake, MN with Father Shane Stoppel as Celebrant of the Mass. Visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment in the church cemetery.

Jim was born on January 31, 1932 in St. Bonifacius, MN to the late Hubert and Frances (Ehalt) Maas. He graduated from eighth grade in 1946 and went straight to work with his father, moving houses and being a jack-of-all-trades. He continued to move houses until 1973.

On July 22, 1950, Jim married his former partner, the late Jeanette Dressel, in Mound. After separating from his former wife in 1960, he remarried the late Marilyn (Henderson) Maas in 1965.

Jim started working for the Minnesota Highway Department in the fall of 1951, beginning a 38-year career, that took him to assignments in Marshall in 1973 and Detroit Lakes in 1975. He retired there in 1990. Besides working, Jim was a Lion’s Club member in Frazee, MN for 18 years, where he also served as the Gambling Manager for the club’s pull-tabs. In 2003, Jim and Marilyn moved to Maple Plain to be closer to his kids.

Jim’s hobby was working on miscellaneous projects, fixing odds and ends for neighbors and friends. He also volunteered many hours at the Church of St. George of Long Lake, maintaining and repairing buildings, furnishings and grounds.

Jim is survived by his sons Daniel Ray Maas of Inver Grove Heights, Mark Steven Maas and his wife Debbie of Clearwater, Michael Paul Maas and his wife Brenda of St. Bonifacius; daughters Susan Kay (Maas) Blouin of Crystal, Nancy Jean (Maas) Tienter and her husband Gary of Robbinsdale, his daughter-in-law Judy Maas of Maple Plain, son-in-law Todd Kasowski of Corcoran; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Frances Maas; brothers, Marvin Maas and Orville “Dick” Maas; son, Ronald James Maas; daughter, Paula (Maas) Kasowski; grandson, Craig J. Maas; son-in-law, Dennis Blouin; daughter-in-law, Jan Maas; and his wife, Marilyn, in 2015.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
