Frazee-Vergas Forum

The second consecutive year of posting an operating loss at the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store set into motion a required public hearing. State law requires a public hearing on the future of a city-owned liquor store if a net loss is posted for at least two of the past three years.  Frazee was one of 29 cities informed it would need to hold such a meeting after the Minnesota State Auditor Office released its annual liquor store report. The report showed Frazee had a net loss of $8,888 in 2015. The year prior the loss totaled $24,877.  The public hearing is set for November 17 at the Frazee City Fire Hall. 

The Vergas Economic Authority discusses options to assist filling the vacant Goodman’s SuperMarket store front. The EDA group agreed to ask to have the building inspected and pay the fee. It may help in the aid of selling the building or make someone aware of remodeling efforts that could happen in the store. 

Some unofficial election results are in for the Frazee City Council- two four year terms; Challengers  Mike Sharp 370, Mark Flemmer 283.  Incumbents David Jopp 161 and Donna Ouart 117.

Frazee Forum

In a five-way race for Frazee City Council, incumbent Fred Daggett and Dean Long claimed the seats. Daggett garnered 314 votes, Long 203, Darcus Arnold 140, Patrick Furey 94 and John Dermody 57. Frazee had the highest voter turnout in its history with 469 votes cast, according to Mel Trieglaff, election official. A record 84 new voters registered, bringing Frazee’s registered voter list up to 610.

Workers had to remove wind -damaged plexiglass from the upper reaches of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee because of the recent storm. Also lost in the early morning hours storm were two pine trees on the church grounds. Many others in the area are reporting damage from the storm that had wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. 

The Vergas City Council plans to oppose a request for an off-sale liquor license for Spanky’s Stone Hearth. This is the first tome a request has been made by Spanky’s for a combined sale/off sale intoxicating liquor license. Spanky’s currently has set-ups and serves wine and beer.

Frazee Forum

A rural Frazee man is hospitalized in Detroit Lakes with injuries received in a truck accident Tuesday morning. Marvin (Bud) Renollet suffered multiple bruises and broken ribs in the accident. Driver of the truck, Delbert Drewes and another passenger, Charles Brasel, both of Frazee, received only minor injures and did not require medical attention.  The accident happened on Highway 59 north of Detroit Lakes when the set of dual wheels on the drivers side fell off, throwing the truck and a loader they were hauling into the ditch and the vehicle flipping over on its side, pinning them inside. The situation was complicated by water in the ditch and Renollet was barely able to keep his head above the water. Drewes and Brasel were able to free themselves from the truck cab and released Renollet from his pinned position. 

Open House at the new Frazee Retirement Center will be held this Sunday. Tours of the 76-bed facility and refreshments will be provided. The Center will officially open for occupancy on November 15. When fully occupied the Center will employ a staff of 25 to 30 people with an annual payroll of approximately $125,000.
