Notes from the Chief
I better write a column this week as I got jumped for my small article last week. It wasn’t the Rochert Stalker who was giving me a bad time, it was her mother! I told her that sometimes the words don’t flow off the keyboard or sometimes I just don’t feel like doing an article. But after seeing last week’s paper, I had the smallest article with the BIGGEST HEADLINE, I better get something typed up for this week.
The cold weather snuck up on us and of course things weren’t totally ready on the farm. Three drinking fountains had a sliver of ice on them and one was slightly frozen. A little tinkering is needed every year to get things in order to keep the water flowing for the livestock.
The cows are on their winter pasture where we are feeding round hay bales on the corn stubble which is helping fertilize the ground and it also means that we do not have to haul that manure from the feedlot next spring.
We are feeding corn silage in the adjacent hay field, again letting the cows spread their own manure, hoping this poorer producing field will rejuvenate itself. There is a fresh water source in this field which is 2,000-feet from the farm.
The water source uses ground heat to keep the lines thawed, although we do have to chop the ice on top when it gets colder. It is quite a system to have water that far from the farm without electricity. We did thin the herd last week and three critters should be hamburger and steaks soon. One 5-year-old bull with a bad foot, one skinny open (not pregnant) cow and one fat heifer. The bull and cow will be ground beef and the fat heifer will make nice rib eyes steaks, T-bones, and other high quality beef products.
