Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…48 calves on the ground as of press time. We should be over 70% calving in the first three weeks of the season. Hopefully, the majority will be in the next three-week cycle and there will always be a couple of stragglers that may be a month or more away from calving.
Now onto some not so happy news…I will be without an ice cream maker this coming winter as my Sweet Aunt Betty (Bigger) passed away last week. The DA and I were lucky enough to visit with this sweetheart of a woman shortly before she passed. She has been the matriarch of the Trieglaff and Bigger families for the last several years, hosting many Sunday birthday dinners just like Grandma Eleanor did. We will definitely miss her and the small family/social gatherings that happened around her kitchen table.
Now, as for the ice cream, the DA and I may have to invest in an ice cream machine before the winter. Crushed ice works well too, but snow works better. The last time we had ice cream was a month or more ago and there were many family and friends there. The only thing that was missing was the hot chocolate sauce.
Someone, (not Betty) forgot to make that delectable delight that evening. It was a struggle, but I choked it down without hot chocolate sauce that evening. I have talked about how her ice cream with the little extra bit of vanilla flavoring mixed with the hot homemade chocolate sauce combines to make something so delicious that one can not get enough. That creamy melted mixture could be poured over a plate of horse apples, and it would still taste good. I’m pretty sure she is using the same small pot to cook the chocolate sauce and the same Tupperware small pitcher to serve it in all these years.
