Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Chief…Well, it’s been a few weeks since my last column and don’t worry, I’ve heard about it from a few fans. One was the ice cream lady so I figure I better be on my best behavior as that season will soon be among us. Another asked the DA why the articles were not there so I better keep them happy too.

The cows are still on their summer pastures and all the haying equipment is put away. The last few years we would have brought the pairs home already and would be feeding some hay.

The corn silage has been chopped this last week and is in a large pile under plastic. We will start to feed that in a month or so, after the silage fermentation process. In a week or so is when we will start to think about bringing some of the pairs home.

We will rotate them amongst the third crop in the hayfields and the corn stubble from the corn chopping. Once the pairs are all home we will precondition the calves by giving them their first round of vaccinations prior to weaning. The calves will get their shots and go back with mama for a few more weeks. This way when the stress of weaning hits, they will have a good immunity built up already.

At weaning time they will get their booster shots and we will weigh the calves. This will happen sometime around the first week of November when we preg check the cows. The pairs will be separated at that time and the calves will go on a backgrounding ration. The cows could go back to pasture depending on how much grass is left and they will get started on some corn silage as well. We do have 14 acres of corn that we will combine so the cows will get to munch on those corn stalks and leaves for a couple weeks as well.
