Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…Survey says…33 calves on the ground, up from 16 last week.  Last Thursday we had four calves in one day, the record is six I believe and that has happened a couple times over the years.

We are just over 51 percent calving done 11 days into the first three-week cycle. The goal is 60 percent calved in the first three-week cycle and we have been in the upper 70’s consistently the last several years.

Apparently, there is a little discrepancy with the term “calving” vs “calfing.” Even as I type the article the word “calfing” has a red squiggly underline showing that it is a misspelling. Calving is the verb form of “to calve” (e.g., The cow is calving). Also used as a noun, “The calving season started April 1.”  “Calfing” is less common, considered a misspelling or a variant spelling in some dialects, sometimes used informally or in regional speech, but not in standard writing. So, if I’m writing or speaking formally, “calving” is the correct term.

The correct spelling is “calving” — with a v — not “calfing”.

Calves vs calf’s are plural vs singular. The calves (plural) are supposed to be in that pen. The calf’s (singular) left leg is sore.

Being I am such a professional and formal writer, I better cite my references.
