Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…(Week of the week before since I forgot to send it to the paper). Another new calf tagged this last week. It took me a few days to find her after the initial morning I found her in the weeds, brush. There were a couple days that we did not see the calf as she was still hiding very well.

When I finally found her, she had plenty of spunk and was not an easy catch. In those situations, I keep moving in slowly, getting the calf to know I’m not a threat. With lightning quickness, I either grab their tail or back right foot. Beings this was a heifer calf; I only needed to put a tag in her left ear. The navel had dried already so I did not apply the iodine either.

There was another nice shot of rain this week. We had around 1.25” which will continue to keep the pastures lush and green. The oats cover crop is coming along nicely, hopefully we will have a nice crop for the herd to chew on when we bring them home.  We will start the first round of vaccinations on the calves the first week of October and then the second round will be November 4 as that is the day we have scheduled for pregnancy checks on the cows.

The calves will also be separated from the cows that day and they will head to their own feed lot to start their background phase of life. The cows will be plenty upset, and the neighbors should hear plenty of cow music during the first weekend of rifle season. We have rotated the two herds that are on the home place. We try to keep at least two fences between the two pastures, so Mr. Bull doesn’t get any wild ideas to jump the fence to visit the unpregnant cows.

This week…I knew we had another cow due last Saturday and Sunday morning, the cow was still off by herself and there was a baby next to her side. This calf was up and going and you don’t want to look her in the eye as she will take off when you are 50 yards away. Needless to say, that calf still isn’t tagged but is doing very well.
