Fingertip left at the scene of home’s damaged basketball hoop

Notes from the Chief

You can blame the absence of an article last solely on me as I took July 4 off and I forgot to ask Scott to type a report. I was not totally off duty on the Fourth, I did help out DLPD with the large crowd of people coming to their fine city beach. I have worked at the beach several times over the years and this year was one of the calmest I would say.

There was one group of troublemakers we gave a little extra attention to, but overall, it was a pleasant experience.

As for the farm, the bulls were brought to pasture on July 5, so we will be expecting calves around the second week in April. First crop of hay has been finished also with all the bales hauled home. This gives us a few days to catch up on other things on the farm that have been neglected due to the haying season.

We have been spraying weeds around the farm and making small repairs before the second crop starts. My records from last year showed that we had 409 bales at the start of the second crop, this year we are at 802 bales.

That number would be plenty enough for the upcoming feeding season, but we will still harvest the better alfalfa fields for the second crop. There are several fields that will be used as pasture instead of hay crops the second time around. The high-quality alfalfa will be used in our backgrounding ration for the calves this fall and winter. Using this alfalfa will save us from having to buy corn distillers or soybean meal for a protein source.

We also like to feed the good alfalfa to the cows as a protein source. In wintertime, the cows normally get 2-3 bales of grass hay each day and 1 good bale of alfalfa. This ration has been working well for us so we will continue to feed this way.
