To the Editor,

The mental health crisis is something that I hear about every day. Here in Minnesota, like in much of the United States, we are facing significant challenges when it comes to mental health, particularly in our rural communities. About one in five adults in our state experience a mental health condition each year, but the impact is felt most deeply in our small towns and farming communities, where access to care is often limited, and the stress of daily life can feel overwhelming.

People living in rural Minnesota face some of the toughest challenges when it comes to mental health. Rates of depression and suicide are higher than in urban areas, and isolation, economic stress, and limited access to care all play a big role. Between 2018 and 2021, suicide rates in rural areas were 36% higher than in cities. In many rural counties, there are fewer mental health providers, which means people often must travel long distances just to get the help they need. And for those in small towns, the economic struggles are often more intense. The constant pressure of maintaining a livelihood in agriculture, where so much is unpredictable, can lead to high levels of anxiety and depression within the community.

As your state senator, I believe in the importance of addressing mental health challenges head-on. That’s why I’m committed to advancing initiatives like the new crisis stabilization unit in Hoffman, which will serve West Central Minnesota. This facility offers a lifeline to those who need care but lack the means to travel far. It is one of many steps we are taking to build a more responsive and compassionate mental health system in our state.

Mental Health Resources Available in Minnesota

As we reflect on International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which this year takes place on Saturday, November 23, it is crucial to highlight and address the mental health impact of suicide loss and its effects on individuals, families, and communities. Our 9-8-8 mental health crisis number provides resources that offer an easier way for individuals in crisis to reach out for help and receive the immediate care they need.

To those who feel the weight of these struggles, know that you are not alone. Countless others share your experiences and understand your pain. There are also people, groups and resources dedicated to helping you navigate these difficult times.

Minnesota offers a variety of other resources for those struggling with mental health issues, particularly in rural areas. We offer programs such as the Minnesota Farm & Rural Helpline, which is a helpline that is tailored specifically to the unique challenges of rural life, providing a listening ear and support. As well as initiatives like the Rural Mental Health Outreach Program, which provides resources for individuals struggling with mental health.

As your senator, I am dedicated to ensuring that our rural communities receive the support and resources they need to tackle this issue. Together, we can work towards a Minnesota where every person, regardless of where they call home, has access to the mental health resources they need to live a healthy, fulfilling life.
