Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…Well, I was correct, there was 1 new baby calf by press time last week. I’m betting there will be a few more babies by the time you read this.
On Friday, we moved the cows from the winter pasture up close to the nice and dry calving grounds. We separated the first calf heifers into their own pasture and separated the bulls as the first cows to calve could start coming into heat any time now. We need to separate them as we don’t want any January calves.
Dad has started with the field work, working up the corn stubble from last year. He put a bunch of new shovels on the field cultivators and rotated the ones that were worn out. I got to weld on one of the cultivators as the frame was broken. Part of my weld did hold and part of it cracked a little. One would think that welding those implements is always the right thing to do, but leaving a crack here and there does provide for a little bit of flexibility on the equipment. We may try some planting this coming week too.
Have a nice week!
