Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…As I type this Thursday evening, all the pairs are up close in the farm yard. The large group of 65 or so will be separated on Friday morning and the weaning tags will be put in the calves’ noses. They will be weighed, weaning tags and receive their second round of vaccines.
The calves will then go back with mama until Wednesday. I may wait until Wednesday to administer the wormer, just to save a step on Friday. The cows and calves will be together for those five days and they will be in the feedlot area so the calves can get used to the feed bunk and water situation. We feel this is another way to lessen the stress due to weaning.
The first is the weaning tags, which block the calf’s ability to drink milk, so after the five days, the calves don’t miss mama as much. This will lead them to going to the feed sooner and starting to gain weight that way.
There is a group of six calves that already had the weaning tags put in. They will be removed on Friday and separated from their mothers. Those mothers were separated out because it is time to make management decisions. These cows have bad feet, legs, udders, etc. They all raised a good calf, but I don’t believe they will be worth it to keep for another winter.
We also have yearling calves that we are up in the air as to what to do with them. A few of them will go into the fat pen and the rest may go to the sales barn. These were the calves born late summer and last fall. There are also nine pairs of the fall calving cows in their own pasture. I do believe that we have two cows yet to calve from the fall herd.
Friday and Wednesday will be some big days on the farm. Wednesday we will also preg check the main herd. We are shooting for 100 percent pregnancy but would gladly settle for anything over 94 percent. Hopefully the bulls did their jobs; the cattle utilized the pastures for the most nutrition and they ate the appropriate amount of mineral throughout the summer to keep their nutrient needs where they need to be. Have a nice week!
