Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Chief…I would like to thank those that helped with and those who brought their kids to the Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 3. I would say we had a pretty successful first run. We had about 20 kids show up throughout the event.
We took the kids through on a couple different obstacle courses with cones and stop signs, using hand signals and showing how to scan for traffic. There also was a turtle race; whoever ever finishes last without putting a foot down, wins. I will definitely be back next year to defend my title!
We also had some volunteers helping with minor bicycle repair and proper tire inflation as well as talking about proper helmet fit and bicycle size for kids. We had hot dogs, chips and juice boxes for the kids as well. We gave away three new bicycles of various sizes. We also gave away several helmets and front and rear lights for the bikes.
Notes from the Farm…57 is the magic number this week. This leaves us with about 20 to go. I will get a closer count this week. We separated all the mamas with babies so the ones that have not calved, (not calfed), are in their own pasture making things easier to manage.
The bulls are also with the pregnant cows as some of the first ones to calve could be coming into heat soon. We don’t want to have any bull to cow contact until July if at all possible. It always seems that one will jump the fence, but we try to keep them separated as best we can.
Numbers show that we had about 75 percent of the herd calve in the first heat cycle, I will take those numbers every year.
Our spring field work is done and our huge corn crop of 40 acres is in the ground along with about five acres of food plots for the deer. Soon it will be time to get the haybines out of the shed for their annual maintenance check and the round baler will be right behind that.
Have a good week!
