Notes from the Chief

As you are reading this, I will probably have a gizzard full of that world famous ice cream and it was not even day old. I received a call from my aunt and got invited up for more ice cream this week. Ask and you shall receive is how the old saying goes.

There has been lots and lots going on at the farm. We sold a bunch of steers in December and they weighed an average of 825 pounds and were gaining 3.3 pounds per day.

In a few months they will be gracing your plates as steaks and burgers. We are close to selling the rest of the beef calves, around 40 this week. We will keep 10-12 replacement heifers and they will switch rations from a grower ration to more of a maintainer ration. We do not need them to fleshy before breeding this summer.

I had the boy count the stock the other day and we have 74 cows, 4 bulls, 40 Holstein steers, 53 beef feeder calves, a few chickens and 1 goat on the farm. Throw in a good old farm dog, a pretty dang good hunting dog and that makes up the animals we care for. Only thing missing is a good cow dog. Maybe there will be one in the future. Have a good week!
