Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…The pastures are getting chewed down as the weather is getting colder. I shut off the water hydrants to the outlying stock tanks, and the herd emptied the tanks, so we don’t have to drain them. I still have to blow out the water lines with the air compressor. There are some stock ponds to drink from as well as the cold weather waterers.

We will be bringing all the pairs in soon so the calves can get a feel for their new home after weaning time. This will let them get used to the feed bunks and waterers that they will be using. This will also help reduce stress, which will also lessen the chance of sickness. Weaning is scheduled the week before deer hunting so the cows will be singing their songs of woe during opening weekend.

The cows will be pregnant checked on November 12. The open (not pregnant) cows will get a second chance this year as we are starting a fall calving herd. The bull will go in with the open cows around Thanksgiving time. This will give us calves in early September. With this method, we can give the bulls a couple of months’ rest, and they can go back to work. The last few years we have sold any open cows, but with the decreased herd numbers in the U.S., it won’t hurt to try something a little different.

We will also be culling (selling) some old cows that just aren’t making the cut anymore.  We have already added six fall calving cows and five spring calving cows, so I am not sure how many more we will be looking at. Last Saturday, there was a bred cow sale in Motley. I will update you if we decided to buy any.

Have a nice week!
