Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…We sold another batch of calves last week. Ten heifers and two steers went to the sales barn in Perham. Beef prices are still doing well so dad was pretty happy with how the calves sold.
The week before we bought six pregnant cows to add to the herd so we will have 60 cows and 10 first calf heifers calving this spring. We kept 12 yearling heifers as replacements to breed and add to the herd. That leaves us with a few animals left that we plan to fatten.
The biggest seven heifers will hopefully be ready by mid-August and the other smaller heifers will be ready in February. We kept one steer back as he has a bad foot and is limping. We gave him some antibiotics so hopefully he will recover. We will fatten him as well. The cows are due to start calving Wednesday, April 17 this year.
This is a little later than normal for us, but we are trying to find a little nicer weather by waiting an extra week or two. More to come in the coming weeks.
