Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…44 cows have come in so there are 42 calves running around as we lost 2 more. These were single birth calves that did not make it once they were born. These are the worst to drive out to the pasture and see the calf laying there, not moving.

Mama is usually there still licking on her baby trying to get it to move. More than likely the cause of these deaths is the placenta not clearing the nose and mouth area causing suffocation.

We thought about buying some put-on calves to adopt to the mamas, but with the rainy weather, the corrals are super muddy, and it would not have been a fun practice to put the cow in the chute to let the calf drink milk twice a day.

We do have a trick that we use, and I will explain that if the need arises. It can take several days for a mama to adopt the new baby and we did not want that hassle. Both of those cows went to Perham Stockyards last Monday along with the other mama that was a hard milker. We shipped her because she was not easy to work with and she also stepped on her calf’s foot, and I thought his leg was broken.

We now have her baby moo in the shed, out of the elements and getting a warm bottle of milk twice a day. Baby moo is also getting some tasty grain and fresh water to help him grow. I took the 3 cows to the sales barn and bought 2 pregnant cows at the auction to keep our numbers up.

Corn planting at the farm is coming real soon and the rains in the last week should for sure help the first crop of hay. Have a nice week!
