Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…This week has started the fall processing of the calves. All the calves born this spring are getting their first rounds of shots. The yearlings from last fall got their annual boosters. The spring calves will get another round of shots in a month when we wean them from mama and separate them.
With weaning being the most stressful time in their lives, they will have a strong immunity built up and with the booster shot, we have seen very little if any sickness at weaning time.
I had a video pop up on the Facebooks from a year ago that showed all the cattle home from the pastures by Sept. 23 last year. We still have a couple weeks of pasture left this fall due to the recent rains as well as our stocking rates are lower this year. This will definitely extend the hay and corn silage we have stockpiled.
The oats cover crop is also growing very nicely and we should get several days of grazing off those 40 acres of corn stubble. The plan now is to bring the herds home by the end of October. We want the calves to be able to get used to their new feedlot while they are with mama for a little while.
This will also help lessen the stress at weaning time. They will be more familiar with the feed bunks and waterer when they get to the pen on their own.
