Becker County Board Chairman John Okeson

Becker County Board of Commissioners Chairman John Okeson announced via email Thursday, April 18, that he will not seek reelection this year.

“It has indeed been an honor to serve our community over the past 14 years as an elected Commissioner of District 3. So, after heavy thoughts, and many sleepless nights, I have decided not to seek re-election.

“I am especially pleased to have been a contributor to a number of collaborative efforts in Becker County including construction of the new Jail, new Highway Building, Expansion of Detroit Lakes/Becker County Regional Airport, Life Flight Helicopter located at the airport, been a strong advocate for promoting road projects throughout Becker County, expansion of our Recycling Center, expanding the Heartland Trail, advocate of Wannigan Park. All of this was accomplished without any increase in tax levies.

“The efforts and outcomes have reinforced my long-held belief that by working together, great things can be accomplished.

“My decision has been guided by both personal and professional reasons. I have always tried to give my all. But, now it’s time to pass the baton and let others bring fresh ideas to Becker County. It has been a great run of service for me with 58 years total working for Becker County. And yes, I will miss serving the people of Becker County!

“I’d like to give a big ‘thank you’ for all of the support from the people of District 3 and Becker County. I will truly miss everyone, but it is now time to spend more time with my family, friends, my two lab hunting dogs and getting some rides in on my Indian motorcycle, and continuing to work on my Township Road Consulting Business.
