Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Chief…The weekend after you read this will be the Minnesota Firearm Hunting Opener.  Please remember to be safe and to let people know where you are going and when you will return. It seems that every year there is a lost hunter in the immediate area.

Notes from the Farm…Well, I may have jumped the gun with our “pre-weaning” program at the farm. The pairs had been in the lot for a few days, but it turned to total slop with the inch of rain last Tuesday. After that the nutritionist stopped out to check on things, he recommended waiting until freeze up to wean the calves. When the weather has warmups and cool downs, that is prime time for respiratory issues in the calves.  Hearing it put that way made a lot of sense. We will keep the calves with the cows for a couple more weeks I guess. Although we haven’t had any issues in the past, why take chances? We choose to wean and separate the calves at this time of year because we will be preg checking the cows next week. We need to separate the cows from calves anyway, so this saves another chore on the farm.

Looking at the long-range forecast, it will still be in the mid 40’s for another week or two.  One thing we like to do is have the calves weaned for a minimum of 45 days. This will ensure that they are over any sickness that they may incur during that time. We have been backgrounding our calves this way for many years. Not every farm will wean and background their calves this way. Lots of farmers separate the calves from the cows and send them right to the sales barn or feedlot. There are several reasons farmers sell at different times and choose to wean with different systems. I will talk about those in a different article.
