To tbe Editor,

Minnesotans’ access to health care, more specifically eye care in new and meaningful ways for communities of all sizes, is at a crossroads at the State Capitol, and your input is necessary.

Currently, in the Minnesota Legislature, SF 1144/HF 1011 would modernize the scope of practice for optometrists to use their knowledge and training to better serve their patients. It has passed the initial legislative committees with bipartisan approval, but this legislation still needs to pass the full House and Senate and receive the Governor’s support.

For the past 20 years, Minnesota Optometrists have been forced to practice outdated optometry, leaving elements of their training unused. This ultimately leaves Minnesotans, who are in desperate need of eye care, with a short list of imperfect options. All procedures included In SF 1144/HF 1011 have been taught and tested in optometry schools and continuing education for decades. These bills would allow Minnesota Optometrists to perform their roles with greater effectiveness, allowing residents of the state to receive care more quickly and effectively.

During this time, there has been an amazing amount of backing for this bill from Republicans and DFLers alike. We are grateful that Senator Jordan Rasmusson and Representative Jeff Backer are strong supporters of this legislation. Unfortunately, the Governor has yet to take a position.

Be a part of improving your community’s access to health care by supporting these bills. Contact the Governor’s office at www.mn.gov/governor/connect or by calling (651) 201-3400 and ask him to support this critical eye care legislation.
