Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…Corn chopping is done for the year. We had about 40 acres that were cut, chopped and piled in 3 ½ hours. We hired a custom crew from Vergas and they made the three corn fields look like chop suey when they were done.

The plastic cover we got to cover the pile is 150 feet by 50 feet. The pile is also about 8-10 feet tall. This plastic cover was unrolled the length of the pile then it was pulled over the pile very gently. I was the youngest on the crew helping to get the plastic secured. Three uncles and a family friend that have been pretty important in our family’s life helped out.

A slight breeze was not a hindrance and it was probably the smoothest pile covering has gone. After the pile was covered, dad and I were each in a skid steer and we piled a mixture of old silage, dirt and compost around the entire edge of the pile. There was about 1-2 feet of plastic laying flat on the ground to act as the airtight seal for the pile.

The corn was harvested around 60-65 percent moisture and should ferment nicely. We will open the pile in a month or so to start feeding the herd for the fall and winter.

We are starting to think about the first round of vaccinations for the calves, as well as bringing the two herds home from their pastures. We have been updating the corral system a little to make things run a little more smoothly. The last two cows finally had their calves as expected. That leaves us with 82 cows that calved and I think our calf numbers are 77-79.

A guy loses interest in counting after two months between the last calves and these two. Or I forgot to mark one down that died or something else like that. We will definitely have a nice calf crop to wean the first week of November. Perfect for the cows to bellar during opening deer season. I seem to hear about it most every year from my neighbor when he is out hunting.

Have a nice week!
