Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…All the pairs are home. We moved the last of the herd from Rethwisch Lane home last Monday. We also bought six pregnant cows from the Perham Stockyards at the Monday sale. These cows were 7-9 months along and the auctioneer called them 8 ½ months. I hauled them home and by gum, a few hours later one of them had a bouncing new baby bull! Talk about up close.
The others are due in the next week or two I would say. These cows will fit into the herd very nicely as we plan to cull some of the older cows that are starting to have issues. Poor feet or udders are the main reasons to cull a cow that is pregnant. Usually, we will keep all the pregnant cows, but last year we lost one due to poor health/old age.
The cows and calves are enjoying the pasture and the freshly chopped corn fields. It will be a few more weeks until we open a pile of corn silage, so they will be grazing away. We may supplement with a hay bale here and there, but the corn stubble should keep them plenty happy. We will also be bringing the whole herd in to vaccinate the calves with their first round of shots this coming week. They will be turned back out with mama for another month before the second round of booster shots and weaning time. The cows will also be preg checked then too. We have had a few weeks off from the cow chores, but things will start to pick up again now that fall is here.
Have a nice week!
