Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…By press time Thursday evening, we had two more calves on the ground. We moved a bunch of pairs to their summer pastures as well. 14 in one, nine across the lake and nine to a relative’s on the other side of town. We have six more to bring to their place for 15 pairs for the summer.
The cows and calves all get a pinkeye vaccine and the cows get their dose of wormer before they are loaded on the trailer. We also check to make sure all the cows have two ear tags so the calves can tell who their mama is.
Haying season has started at the farm as well. We will start with some wet bales and see how the balers like that, although two very nice men from the red and yellow equipment dealership cautioned against it.
I asked each about using my baler and dad’s older balers and I got two similar answers. One said to wait until the hay dries and the other said to buy a different baler. We do have someone who can wrap the wet bales if they turn out so we will see how it goes. I’m only concerned with the good alfalfa to wet bale and the rest of the hay can lay in the field and dry like normal.
