Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…Pigs in a blanket. That was my Halloween costume. Always good when one can make fun of themselves.
Deer hunting came and went this year on the farm. We had six of us hunting and only got one deer. Opening weekend was my weekend off so I was in the deer stand bright and early Saturday morning. Around 7:30 a.m., I saw two bucks that started about 200-yards away and one came within 30-yards of the stand. It was fun to watch, and I reached for my rifle, which I left in the house. Oh well, there will be plenty of more time. Not sure if I would have shot at it anyways. Hunting isn’t always about shooting deer, but just about getting out in nature and enjoying the serenity of the field and woods.
Monday morning, I was in the stand and at about 7:40 a.m., I heard one gunshot that was fairly close. A few minutes later dad called and asked if I heard him shoot which I did, not knowing it was him. He told me that he got an 8-point buck. Out of the stand I went off to help the old man with his deer.
Last year Uncle Pat shot a similar buck and this year it was dad’s turn. Dad said he earned this one, for all the years he has sat in that deer stand. This was only his second deer from this stand. Dad was also using his original Marlin 30-30 lever action. There was not much other action as far as downed deer on the farm this year. Maybe next year.
Dad bought the rifle from his Uncle Walt Roxtrom some 63 years ago, he said. Uncle Walt was married to Grandpa Ed’s sister Mable. Those of you with history in Frazee will remember that Walt and Mable’s farm was out on State Highway 87 and they later lived in town on Willow across from the lake. One interesting fact about Uncle Walt’s farm is he had a small concrete building to house blasting caps or dynamite. I believe that piece of history is still standing just off State Highway 87.
