Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…I think I finally have all the waterers running up to temps just as it will start to warm up a little. The purchase of a new tank heater along with trouble shooting the issues and the waterer for the calves is staying open.
I had four tank heaters in the water and it still wasn’t working the way it should. I found that one cord was popping the GFI circuit, which tells me there was a short in one of those heaters. I eliminated all but one new tank heater and the water has not frozen since.
Someone asked me how the cows were doing last week and the report was not the best. We lost two animals in the last week or two. The first was a 1,700-pound fat steer that was scheduled to go to the butcher shop last Tuesday. Most likely he laid down and got onto his side and could not get up. It seems that we lose one like that every other year or so. Cattle end up on their side, can’t get up and end up bloating and dying. Had we noticed that he was struggling we could have tried to help but we found him too late.
The other calf had an injury which caused his downfall. A prolapsed rectum was the cause of his death. This steer was about 750 pounds and was due to go to the sales barn this week. A couple of tough pills to swallow with the current beef markets.
The majority of our beef calves will have gone through the sale ring at the Perham Stockyards on Monday, Feb. 2. About 60 steers and heifers were shipped for the sale leaving us with 10 replacement heifers and a couple odd balls that we decided to keep.
