Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…The herd is all settled into their winter homes. The beef cows are their winter pasture with fresh water, hay and corn silage as their main diet. There is a mineral supplement that we feed in the silage and there are salt blocks for them to lick on. There are eight fall calves that are still on mama’s milk, and they have a creep feeder with grain to help them through the cold months. They are eating hay and silage next to mom too.

The calves that were weaned November 11 and are all doing well in their feedlot. Their ration is ground hay, ground corn and corn silage. The calves get a mixture of 800 lbs. of hay, 600 lbs. of corn, 40 lbs. of mineral and about 2900 lbs. of corn silage. We make a batch of feed for them every other day, so the calves eat about 25-27 pounds of feed per day. They also have salt blocks to enjoy if their mineral needs are not quite met with the mineral in the ration.

We also have three steers in the fat pen. These are close to butchering size and are on a “steer stuffer” ration. They have a corn-based ration with a pellet for mineral and protein. They basically have an all you can eat buffet of the corn and pellet along with some free-choice hay to nibble on.

All the waterers are working well after the initial cold snap. It seems that things need to freeze at least once in order to find the weak spots in the system that may need a new heater or extension cord to keep things thawed out.

One other item of interest…Our farm, The Trieglaff Family Farm or Blue Line Farm, was named Outstanding Conservationist for the state by the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts this past week. More about that in future articles.
