Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…Cow number 60 has had her baby so that leaves 11 to go. The actual number would be 4, but we bought 8 more pregnant cows to keep our number closer to 70.
One of those heifers is open so she went into the pre-fat pen and will be on your dinner plate this fall sometime. The numbers I have show that we calved 82 percent of our cows in the first three weeks of calving season.
This correlates with a very high number of cows being covered in the first heat cycle last July when we put the bulls in. This is a very important factor on a beef operation as it keeps the calves in a similar age range which will keep them more consistent come sale day 7-8 months from now. With the two we lost there are 58 calves running around with 55 percent heifers and 45 percent bulls (now steers after we band them at birth).
The bull testing went well with four of our five bulls passing with a satisfactory rating and one failing miserably. He will go down the road and by the time you read this hopefully we will have a replacement picked out. The issue is that most breeding bull sales are over and I did not bid on any last week at the Perham sales barn. I did make contact with a farmer about an hour away so we will see what happens. We have been using mainly Simmental bulls the last few years and we are very happy with the calves we are getting.
Our cows are a mixed bunch of Hereford and Angus crosses with now some young Simmental heifers having their first calves. Next year, we will need to cycle out a few more bulls so I’m not sure what breeds of bulls we will look for. Have a nice week!
