Notes from the Chief

The cows were pregnant-checked back in early November and we had very good results. A total of 73 of 77 were pregnant and the neighbor had 21 out of 21. Those numbers were very good for us as the vet told us that he had seen some numbers in the 70 percent range pregnant.

A speaker at a recent seminar I went to said that he saw some herds with a 50 percent conception rate. Many factors can contribute to an open cow: summer heat stress, nutrition or lack of, a proper mineral program, etc. We have the calves in their own feedlot and are thinking about selling them soon. We plan to weigh the calves this past weekend and that will give us an idea as to when and where we want to sell.

We did sell 8 steers around the first week in December. These calves went to a relative who is raising some for the county fair and also to market some as fat beef. I am excited to see these animals come fair time. I may stop by their place soon to see how the process is going.

We have a scale on the chute at the farm and we use a very scientific way to check the calibration. A couple of us will each get on the scale, and we will check the accuracy to what we think we should weigh. If the scale shows around 280-285 lbs. when my fat arse is on the scale, well that is pretty close with boots and clothes on.

Selling a few this time of year sure helped with the finances as well. Hopefully, our customers see good results and we can continue the practice. Over the last couple years, we have fattened our own beef and sold halves and quarters to friends and family. We have one steer that will be ready soon and I did not have to market it as prior customers texted me asking if we were going to butcher soon. That makes a guy feel pretty good to have customers calling for our home-grown product. Working with the nutritionist in the past has shown us the way that works best for us to raise and produce the best product that we can. I will let you know how the calves weigh up next week.
